Caboolture Lakes Bowls Club

Caboolture Lakes Bowls Club is situated in Beachmere, which is approximately 40 minutes north of Brisbane; halfway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and a few minutes off the Bruce Highway.

The Caboolture Lakes Bowls Club had its original beginnings as the War Veterans’ Home and Caboolture District Bowling Club which was established on 19th May 1953. It was built in the grounds of the Caboolture War Veterans’ Home and is now known as the Memorial Bowls Club.   In 1977 the Club signed a lease with the Caboolture Shire Council to lease about 1.1hectacres of land in the Caboolture Sports Centre, with the Club able to freehold the lease for $20,000 at any time in the next 99 years.

Plans were drawn up and construction commenced in 1978 on two greens and the clubhouse in 1979.

The War Veterans’ Home and Caboolture District Bowling Club transferred the lease on the 19th October 1979 and was officially opened on 8th December 1979. The existing club in the War Veterans’ Home grounds was sold as a going concern , fully equipped to bowlers associated with the War Veterans Home and was named the Memorial Bowls Club.

After transfer the Club changed its name to Caboolture Bowls Club. The Club grew and prospered through the 80’s and 90’s; although kept viable by funds raised by the Bingo Committee and later by poker machine profits.

The club faced financial difficulties between 2000 and 2006.   The battle to save the club had members taking part in many protests and narrowly escaped eviction, which was set to take place on 15th May 2006.  Fifty members of the Club travelled to the Brisbane District Court to support a delegation of six from the Club who had to sit through a ninety minute hearing. Things looked a little gloomy until a last minute successful offer from the Caboolture Sports Club, meant that the twenty seven year history of the Club would continue. Throughout a two year ordeal Club members showed solid team work, by organising fundraisers to pay the debt that had accumulated, they even went as far as staging an eleven day “sit in“ at the Club to prevent a take over. (Who said Bowlers weren’t stubborn).   Sadly, over time, some of those staunch members are now deceased, and they, along with the other participants will be long remembered for their support in the campaign to save the Club. Thankfully the Caboolture Sports Club came to the rescue, just like in the old westerns, the good guys rode in and saved the day, well in this case they may have left their horses at home, but they sure did save the day.

After purchase the complex was named Centenary Lakes Sports Club and they invited bowls club members to play and be a part of their sporting complex. The Caboolture Sports Club invested heavily in the refurbishment of the existing building;providing a new modern facility offering a well stocked bar, restaurant, catering and function room facilities. The greens surrounds are well maintained; one green having been fully refurbished with new plinths and ditches installed in 2013, the second green is due for new plinths and ditches later this year.

The Bowls Club was officially named the Caboolture Lakes Bowls Club Incorporated on 2nd July 2000.

The club has both a Men’s and Ladies Games Section; in Pennants competing against Kilcoy, Woodford, Caboolture Memorial, Beachmere, Glasshouse Country, Narangba, Solander Lake, Bongaree and Bribie Island.   In 2012 the Men’s section won Divisions 2 and 5.

In 2012, the Men’s Super Challenge team made it through the sectional playoffs and to the Semi Finals, before losing to the eventual winners, Bargara.   Again in 2013 saw the Men make it through the sectional playoff and going down narrowly 2 rinks to 3 in the Quarter Final.   This year (2014) the Men’s team made it to the final; defeating Woombye in the play-off on 22nd March to progress to the semi final.  In the semi final on the 29th March at Tweed Heads they defeated Carina Leagues to advance to the final; where they eventually lost to Wynnum.

The club currently has approximately 170 members registered with Bowls Queensland and the numbers have been steady for the last couple of years. Our bowler’s ages range from 22 to 91. Finding new members these days is getting harder.
